Roman Space Telescope Cleared for Aug. 30 Falcon Heavy Launch from Kennedy
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has completed its Flight Readiness Review and is being prepared for liftoff aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Launch is scheduled for no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 30, from Launch Complex 39A, sending the observatory on a mission to study dark energy, search for exoplanets, and investigate the physics of distant stars.
Roman is described as NASA's next great observatory, positioned to lead the next generation of astronomical discoveries. The telescope has spent the last several weeks undergoing final launch preparations at Kennedy Space Center, moving steadily through fueling, integration, and rehearsal milestones ahead of its scheduled departure.
Technicians loaded the observatory with 290 gallons, or 1,100 liters, of hydrazine fuel on July 25, then attached it to its payload adapter in early August. Roman was recently encapsulated inside the Falcon Heavy payload fairing and underwent a full launch-day dress rehearsal on Aug. 20. NASA, SpaceX, and Roman mission managers completed the mission's Flight Readiness Review on Aug. 21, formally clearing the observatory to begin its final launch preparations.
Next, the encapsulated telescope will be transported to SpaceX's hangar at Launch Complex 39A, where it will be attached to the Falcon Heavy rocket before rolling out to the pad for launch later this week. SpaceX will conduct the launch from the historic pad, carrying the observatory to space to begin its new mission.
NASA states that the Roman Space Telescope will research the mysteries of dark energy, search for exoplanets, and investigate the physics of distant stars.
